UPPER PIGEON RAFTING

The Upper Pigeon is an ideal 2 hr. trip for novices, families, and adventure seekers alike. This five-mile section of the Big Pigeon River is filled with 15 rapids ranging from Class 2 to Class 4 and offers fun for everyone. As you traverse down the upper Pigeon River you will work hand in hand with your guide and boat mates to ensure you are able to take in all the beautiful the Smoky Mountains has to offer. This trip will be both splashy and scenic and is the best way to see East Tennessee.

DETAILS

  • Minimum Weight/Age requirement: 70lbs or 8 yrs.
  • Intensity Level: Exciting but not strenuous. No previous white-water experience needed.
  • Trip Length: Approximately 2 hours (this includes your safety orientation and river trip)
  • Equipment Furnished: Raft, paddle, PFD, helmet.
  • Season: May to Memorial Day: Tues, Wed, Thu (limited release from 2pm-6pm). Memorial Day to Labor Day: Tue, Wed, Thu, Sat. (Standard release). Sunday – Memorial Day & Labor Day

It’s the best trip in the southeast to introduce your littlest boaters to whitewater before they meet the age requirements for the Upper Pigeon. If you’re looking for a fun, relaxing river trip with time to play in the water, enjoy the scenery, and goof off with your little ones, then this 5-mile stretch of Class I and II rapids is the trip for you!

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE UPPER AND LOWER PIGEON RIVER SECTIONS?

The Pigeon River offers two exciting trips ranging from big splashy white water to a quiet float for the youngest first-timers. The popular Upper Pigeon is five miles of intermediate class III and class IV rapids – with views into the Great Smoky Mountain National Park, making for a thrilling ride through drops like Powerhouse, Big Rock, Roller Coaster, Lost Guide and Double Reactionary.
The easy-going Lower Pigeon is the perfect trip for novices, for families with small children or those seeking a fun and relaxing river experience. This is a mellow 2.5 hour trip on class I and II white water, and has the lowest age restriction of any trip Ober runs – age 3!
